D’back debaters take home awards

On Saturday, November 2, 2019, D’back debaters Lauren Fimbres, Caleb Stevens, Marlene Gutierrez, Aidan Romero, Oliver Jones,  and Alexander Jones participated in the Nextgen Debate League (NGDL) Character Clash tournament held at John Glenn Middle School of International Studies  (JGMS) from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Tanner Truman, Alexander Gallegos, Valencia Rojas- Farley and Austin Huffman volunteered as timers.
DRA walked away with 2nd place school award. Team Fimbres, Gutierrez, Stevens won 3rd place team award. Speaker awards went to Marlene Gutierrez (5th place), Lauren Fimbres (6th place),  Oliver Jones (7th place) and Aidan Romero (9th place).
“I am really proud of our debaters. They were prepared and excited! They also modeled A.I.R. character traits. The timers also did a great job! I received a lot of compliments about our debaters and timers, ” said Ms. Flaherty, debate coach.
Other school awards went to JGMS (1st place school), and Bobby Duke Middle School (3rd place school).  Desert Christian Academy won 1st place team and  JGMS won 3rd place team.
Prizes were given to students wearing costumes and to Desert Christian Academy for the best dressed team.
Seventeen teams from the following schools participated in the debate tournament:  John Glenn Middle School, Desert Ridge Academy, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Bobby Duke Middle School, and Desert Christian Academy.
